Nelson Mandela by Daniel Walsh

Nelson Mandela

Nelson (Rolihlahla) Mandela was born in 1918 on the 18th July in Mvezo/Transkei.

His farther was the chief of the Tembu tribe

Rolihlahla means troublemaker

Nelson had 4 mothers 1 farther 3 brothers and 9 sisters.

Nelson was the only person in their family to get an education.

Nelson was sent to school at the age of seven where he got an English name which was Nelson.

When Nelson was 9 his farther died of tuberculosis so he went to live with his rich uncle Jongy.

At the age of 19 Nelson began to box and run a lot.

Then nelson went to Fort Hares University where he made a friend called Oliver Tambu.
Oliver and Nelson went through most things together and went and got out of jail at the same time. They were even colleagues.

After 1 year in Fort Hares university Nelson became student council but he refused and protested the students should vote for that Nelson was banned from university.

Soon after getting banned Nelson and Jongi’s son were told that they were getting married. As Nelson and Justice (Jongi’s son) heard this they fled to Johannesburg 700 miles away.

Soon after this he got married himself to a nurse named evelyn who was also from Transkei. They had 2 sons and 2 daughters but sadly one daughter died.
They divorced after 13 years though nelson kept close to his 2 sons and 1 daughter.
Soon after Nelson got married again to a social worker named Winnie and had 2 daughters. After 39 years after nelson was released from Robin Island prison they divorced but still Nelson stuck close to his children.

Soon Nelson decided to start a campaign that whites and blacks should be treated the same way.

At the age of 22 he went to a university to study the law.

Once Nelson was graduated he joined the A.N.C (African national congress) to fight for freedom for the blacks. He started treason so black and white people should be treated the same way.

Ever since the whites invaded Africa they ruled everything and didn’t treat black people fairly
For encouraging small black children to do what he did he was jailed for a long time. His first prison was Robin Island (which was just off the coast of Cape Town) and he was imprisoned there for 8 years. He only had 2 visitors and messages a year. His first message was that his mother had died and so did his daughter after that he spent many years in sorrow.

Once he was found that he fled Africa with a fake passport the police searched for him for many years. Then one day he was imprisoned in his car as he was found out for leaving the country with a fake passport. And again prisoned but for life
He was then prisoned in a prison on the coast of Cape Town for 6 years which was a bit cleaner than robin Islands prison (but still his feet and hands could touch the ceiling when he lay down and still was given a bucket for a toilet), and was only allowed 2 visitors and 2 letters a year. In 1988 he was moved to another prison which had a cottage and a swimming pool.

When the old president died the new one let Nelson out and he was freed on 1990. He then got elected for president and then made the whites and blacks have peace together.

Then on his 80th birthday he got married again to Graca.
